Better Late Than Never!
November 26, 2006
Our new blouses have arrived! Political unrest, heavy rains and important religious and cultural events impacted production this season, but we have, as promised, received three beautiful hand-woven items from our trading partners in Bangladesh. Several of the key concepts of fair trade emphasize building long-term relationships with producers and trading with mutual trust and respect. Fair trade organizations commit to placing regular orders with producers to ensure business continuity. In contrast, conventional clothing companies often move production from factory to factory in search of lower labor costs and faster turnout. This fear of job loss contributes to the erosion of human rights as factory owners force workers into longer hours for less pay. Through the receipt of regular orders from fair trade organizations, producers are able to develop independent, sustainable businesses and are not threatened with unemployment. This, in turn, benefits entire communities. So, while delivery of the new items might have been delayed a few weeks, the benefits of fair trade to the producers in Bangladesh – job security and community development – and to our customers – beautiful, high-quality clothing – are well worth the wait! Fair Industry jewelry is on sale at the annual Fair Trade Holiday Sale in Lawrence, KS, through November 30th, 2006. Fair Industry clothing and accessories will be available at the 3rd annual Muna Fest in Brattleboro, VT, on December 2nd, 2006, and several pieces will be modeled in the coinciding Fair Trade Fashion Show. Best wishes from everyone at Fair Industry www.fairindustry.com
